A new concept designed to fix the uncertainty, friction, and offline gaps of traditional vending — with real-time visibility, reliable pickup, and a clearer end-to-end journey.

Problem

Vending hasn’t evolved - users still face uncertainty and friction.

Current vending machines offer limited transparency and rely entirely on in-person interaction. Users often waste time checking machines with no guarantee of stock, nutritional fit, or payment reliability. No mainstream app exists today that connects users to vending machines in real time, resulting in a fragmented, outdated experience.

Solution

A companion app designed to modernise the entire experience.

SnackMate introduces a digital layer that does not currently exist in the vending industry. Instead of users relying on guesswork, hardware limitations, or reacting to what the machine presents, the companion app restructures the journey so key decisions happen before physical interaction takes place.

The solution focuses on five core flows — each addressing a specific real-world problem observed during research.

Discover — Know what’s available before moving

Users can see nearby machines, real-time stock, and basic dietary tags (e.g. vegan, high-protein, low-sugar). Distance and location details help them decide whether a machine is worth walking to.

Problem solved: wasted trips to empty or irrelevant machines.

Decide — Make a clear, quick choice

A structured product list replaces cramped, inconsistent machine UIs. Each item shows price, calories, key nutritional data and allergens, with optional filters to narrow by dietary needs.

Problem solved: slow, unclear decision-making at the machine.

Purchase & Collect — Remove friction at the machine

Payment and pickup are treated as one smooth flow:

  • Mobile checkout via Apple Pay / Google Pay or saved card.

  • A clear order summary and confirmation.

  • A secure code plus optional swipe-to-collect for dispensing at the machine.

This reduces dependency on unreliable card readers and minimizes queuing.

Problem solved: failed payments and unpredictable pickup experiences.

Recover & Build Trust — When things go wrong

If something doesn’t dispense or there’s an issue, users can quickly report it in-app, optionally attach a photo, and send a structured report (including machine and product data) to support. A simple reward and points model helps turn good experiences into ongoing usage.

Error-Tolerant Interactions

Dual pickup methods (swipe + code) support variable environments, including low signal and ageing machines. This avoids critical failure points in the journey.

Trust-Centred UI

Clear confirmations, transaction summaries, and consistent component patterns reinforce reliability. The interface avoids dark patterns and prioritises transparency.
